Featured Scientist: Molly Timmers - 10.06.2014

Occupation: Marine Ecosystem Project Manager for the Coral Reef Ecosystem Division of NOAA Fisheries by day, graduate student at the Hawaii Institute of Marine Biology by night.

Hometown: Don’t really have one because I moved around a lot.

How I got into Marine Science: : Hmm, well I always thought that I would be a park ranger or work in forestry because I loved the woods immensely. However, after my undergraduate education, I received a research internship to study whales in Madagascar. I enjoyed working on the ocean and continued to pursue marine science internships and jobs. I eventually landed a job working on coral reefs in Hawaii and 12 years later, I’m still here!

Research Interests: I am interested in the biodiversity, community composition, and trophic structure of non-coral marine invertebrates across spatial, environmental and habitat gradients.

Interests growing up: Singing, acting, reading, hiking, daydreaming, playing basketball and volleyball.

Scientific Mission: To conduct meaningful science that influences conservation and to communicate science effectively to a variety of audiences.

Advice for Young Scientists: Be open and try new experiences. Stay curious and don’t be afraid to ask questions. Keep persevering and always try to maintain a positive attitude. And, keep an ear and eye open at all times because opportunities arrive when you least expect it.
